Budapest – the pearl of the Danube

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is one of the most beautiful cities of the Central European region. Budapest is a cosmopolitan city that spans the magnificent river Danube.

Formerly the second city of the all-powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire, Budapest was at the turn of the 20th century one of the world's leading cities and evidence of this remains in its layout, grand design and stunning architecture.

Peaceful and yet vibrant, the city treasures the old while embracing the new. It is a city full of contrasts and contradictions, which makes it come alive and gives it a somewhat magnetic quality. Citing the city's unparalleled panorama, it should come as no surprise to learn that UNESCO declared many spots of Budapest, also known as "the Pearl of the Danube", a World Heritage site.

This sophisticated city is the cultural hub of central Europe with a tradition of excellence in the Arts which is manifested in its numerous museums and galleries, world famous opera houses, many renowned theatres, music and dance.

This lively and pleasant city is a place where local people and visitors can find a variety of leisure activities and entertainment. Walking around the city, visitors are lured by the lively café culture with a multitude of stylish cafés, terraced restaurants and bars to choose from in areas such as Liszt Ferenc Square in the 6th district and the recently renewed Ráday Street, in the 9th district.

Budapest is also famous for its baths and spas, with thermal water an abundant and natural resource in Hungary. These thermal baths range from Turkish and wave baths, to open air swimming pools and hydrotherapeutic baths, which are renowned for both their relaxing and healing properties.

Budapest offers great shopping opportunities. It has many shopping malls, one of them being the largest in Eastern Europe. Andrassy Avenue, undoubtedly the most beautiful avenue in Budapest, hosts a variety of world famous designer shops like Louis Vuitton and Ermenegildo Zegna. Budapest is famous for its antique markets. Worth a visit is Vásár-csarnok, which is a traditional, old food and vegetable market hall.

This city is host to a range of cultural and sporting festivals. It is a venue for European and world championships in many sports, and at the Hungaroring, near Budapest, the Hungarian Grand Prix Formula One race is held. It is also a popular destination for music concerts with the likes of Sting, Eric Clapton and Robbie Williams performing recently. All of this attracts more than 12 million visitors to Budapest each year.
